How to manually save a CSV file with UTF-8 encoding

Below are the steps depending on the version of Microsoft Office you are using.

Office 2016+

In Excel 2016 and newer, you can now choose to save a CSV file with UTF-8 directly:

  1. Click File then Save As
  2. In the “Save As” window choose Browse
  3. In the “Save As” dialog click the Save as type drop down
  4. Select the “CSV UTF-8 (comma delimited) (*.csv)” option
  5. Click the Save button

Office 2013 and older

Older versions of Excel don't have an encoding option so you must use Notepad to change the file to UTF-8:

  1. Right click the file and select “Open With Notepad”
  2. Click File
  3. Click Save As
  4. In the “Save As” dialog click the Encoding drop down
  5. Select the “UTF-8” option
  6. Click the Save button
